More than 1,000 workers have been confirmed infected with COVID-19 at a garment factory near Colombo, Sri Lanka's largest ever COVID-19 outbreak, local media reported Wednesday.
As of August, the factory had produced 200 million masks for U.S. customers.
The sri Lankan government said the factory had its first confirmed patient Thursday and the number of confirmed cases has been increasing, AFP reported Wednesday. As of Sunday, 1,026 of the factory's 1,700 employees had been diagnosed and hospitalized. The rest of the staff and all their families are in quarantine and will be tested in the next few days. The area around the plant was sealed off indefinitely. The factory, owned by Brandix, Sri Lanka's largest garment exporter, had produced 200 million masks for export to the United States as of August, though details of its customers were unclear.Brandix said he had tried to contain the outbreak, but the response had not been effective because there were too many asymptomatic patients.
